To understand what Antioxidants are we first need to understand what a Free Radical is and why they’re potentially detrimental to the body. Oxygen is split down in your body into single atoms with unpaired electrons. These electrons only like to be paired up and will travel your body until they find another electron to bind with. This is a normal reaction that is essential to life, allowing us to turn air and food into chemical energy, or operating our immune system.
Oxidative stress occurs when your body is making more free radicals than it can regulate. This can cause cell damage leading to cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases, cataracts and cancer. Antioxidants can protect your cells from free radicals, by preventing them from forming, by scavenging them or by promoting their decomposition, and CBD as being one of the most effective anti-oxidising agents in nature, having both direct and indirect effects on how our body deals with free radicals.
The cannabis plant is thought to be 30-50% more effective than Vitamin C and E as an antioxidant, and has been shown to have neuroprotective benefits too giving it potential scope to treating neurodegenerative illnesses such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
